3 Ways Leading Oilfield Service Companies Secure Site Operations During COVID-19

January 15, 2021

As the British Columbia Health Authority intervened on operations for large industrial worksites, many large producers who have implemented digital solutions to manage risk are doubling up their programs and many oilfield service companies are evaluating their role in site safety.

The changing pandemic requires agile but advanced security measures in all health and safety solutions. If you haven’t implemented your own field program or been mandated by your producer to adopt theirs, here is a great toolkit to start with.

1. Daily Health Checks

Access: Ensure workers can access a secure questionnaire for any worksite with ease and accuracy, on mobile or desktop.

Format: Your traditional web form isn’t going to cut it when it comes to managing employee privacy and personal health information. Ask your IT and Security team if you’re able to permanently erase an employee’s information from your system after their employment ends? Recently proposed law, Bill C-11, requires companies to be able to be able to physically remove data associated to an individual, if that person leaves the company due to layoff or termination of any sort. Fines to a company for not complying can be up to 5% of gross revenue, or up to $25 Million.

Tip: Safety and Procurement teams should look for a solution with a tamper-proof technology enablement, such as private blockchain, to achieve the ability to uncouple a worker from the organization.

2. Contact Tracing

After you have employees perform a secure, pre-worksite Daily Health Check, consider keeping the crew safe with a Contact Tracing device. These offer benefits such as:

  • Real-time social distancing reminders
  • Tracing close contacts only in the event of a positive COVID-19 occurrence while following CDC guidelines for proximity tracing, 15 mins of cumulative close contact within a 24 hour period
  • Data can be uploaded quickly and easily through an administrator app, maintaining worker privacy. Only the workers affected are removed from the site allowing operations to continue and workforce productivity to continue by demonstrating irrefutable evidence to health authorities.
  • Cost-effective, no smartphones required
  • Worn only at work
  • Device is light, waterproof, and discreet

3. Certifications & Safety Document Tracing

Companies can mitigate risk and decrease expenditure further by having these solutions integrated with existing Health and Safety or HR Systems. A system that can integrate in real time with external training providers and alert managers of expiring certifications for workers prevents costly delays or non-compliance to the safety requirements of a site. These integrated solutions provide a wholistic view of a worker across Health and Safety and Human Resources while decreasing administrative time managing employee training records and complying with privacy laws.

Tip: Consider using a solution that easily alerts a user of new policy or safety protocols for a specific operation site to obtain a digital acknowledgement that supports auditing in the case of an incident, outbreak, or to support new ESG reporting.

As the pandemic evolves, a multitude of stakeholders depend on organizations to deliver tools to their workers that keep them, their families, and the communities they operate in, safe.
