Have you considered how every time you need to get an important document from an organization, government body, or business, it requires you to verify who you are by using a simple, standard element such as your email account that you've had since university? Whether it is getting critical documents about your education or trying to control the management of your identity through third-party applications, we need a better way to share and manage valuable information. Thankfully, you are not alone. Along with the work that the Canadian Government is doing with Credivera, there are organizations such as the Decentralized Identity Foundation (DIF) that share that same mission of creating new structures for this digital economy, with you having the control you deserve. Credivera is excited to announce that we have joined DIF as an Associate Member.
DIF is “focused on developing foundational elements necessary to establish an open ecosystem for decentralized identity and ensure interop between all participants.” Decentralized in this context means that no one organization holds all of the power. The term interop means that this data can operate across multiple operating systems and that there is a framework for you to gain access to materials surrounding your identity and share it where you want, anywhere in the world.
DIF is facilitating a global exchange of information through its Working Groups that cover some of the following areas:
Identifiers and Discovery
This working group is responsible for deciding how people, organizations, and devices can be identified without using a standard process such as personal email addresses. This group works on creating protocols that address, confirm, and transmit information across decentralized systems such as blockchain, an underlying framework that Credivera uses for verified credentials in the workplace.
Claims and Credentials
The ability to verify the public claim that we have the workplace credentials, education, personal identity, and other forms of identity we tell the world we have, is critical for an organization to trust you. It is also important to the technology sector as they create solutions in the form of apps and services to support digital identity. DIF’s working group of talented engineers are responsible for defining the tools and specifications that will help this global ecosystem work effectively and securely.
Wallet Security
Everyone is talking about a digital Wallet these days. Is it the one on your iPhone that helps you buy that triple-shot latte with the swiftest tap? Or, is it the one such as Credivera, where you hold your verified career certifications and credentials? DIF is working with technology leaders to define a universal terminology for understanding the security requirements of wallets and the architecture that allows for sharing your information from one wallet to another, regardless of which company made it. Have you ever tried sharing music, photos, or files quickly from an Apple iPhone to a Samsung Android and have been frustrated that the two systems do not play well together? The result is feeling trapped and restricted by an operating system for how you get to share your own information, similar to how we feel when trying to access personal identity documents from the government or an institution.DIF and Credivera believe in the portability and secure storage of your digital identity credentials and that no single company should have a monopoly on how you gain access to it.
